Metal Changes

Church bells rang in the distance as Adam pulled up to Tony’s, a group made for a school project, apartment. Adam listened to the bells longingly, normally he would be in church on Sundays but Tony’s only day available to work together was Sunday.

Adam checked himself out in the mirror before heading in. His short brown hair was still neat, as well as his button down shirt and pants. He dreaded walking in. Of all the people in his business class to be paired with, he got stuck with Tony, a 23 or so year old stoner metal head attempting college for a second or third time. He pulled himself together and headed towards the apartment door, desperate to get this over with.

Once he got inside, he saw that the room was a mess. Posters covered the walls in every direction, covering bands he had never heard of before, weed laying out in the open, and CD’s and records all over the place. How someone could live like this, Adam didn’t know.

Tony was polite enough when meeting Adam at the door. He even offered a drink and snack, a fresh baked cookie, though he neglected to mention the additions to it.

Adam accepted Tony’s niceties and sat down at the messy kitchen table, ready to get to work. About half an hour into working, Tony got up to put some music on, claiming “I can’t think without some music.” Adam had no idea what band, let alone song, was now blasting though the sound system, but Adam didn’t care, this wasn’t his music anyways. The drums were loud and pounding, repeatedly beating in his head. Guitars whirled, making sounds Adam didn’t know could be made on an electric guitar. The vocalist was also surprisingly effeminate in how his voice sounded, hitting very high notes in his screams.

Tony looked up at Adam, observing how his head was bobbing with the beat of the song and feeling the weed cookie start to kick in for himself. “What do you think of Priest?” Tony asked unexpectedly.

“Huh? Oh, they’re OK I guess. What the name of this band?”

“Judas Priest, a legend in the Metal sphere.” Tony raised his hand in a devil horns and dropped his head back as Halford erupted a ring wraith scream in the song. He looked back down at Adam, disappointed that he wasn’t joining in, yet. “I got something you’ll like better.” and Tony was off to change the record.

Drums erupted on the sound system. Heavy base drums being bashed in slammed in rapid succession. The music caught Adam off guard, but he could feel his head fading a little as it focused on the intense drum work. A base guitar and electric guitar joined the drums in it’s lightning passe. The haze in Adam’s head grew as the intense music drowned out all thought.

Adam’s button down shirt changed into a black Motorhead shirt, followed by his cardigan shifting into a leather jacket. His nerdy glasses changed into reflective aviators as his hair grew long, almost down to his ass.

Memories started to change next, years of being a good christian boy were replaced with drinking, smoking, and lots of good heavy metal. The girlfriend who had met at a church social was replaced by Tony, whom he’d met at a concert. Adam didn’t lose his intelligence, what he did lose was his motivation. School still mattered, but Heavy Metal was now more important to him.

The song, Overkill by Motorhead he now knew, was building to it’s sudden collusion as Adam raised his arm with devil horns and screamed. Tony looked at him excitedly. Adam now looked like a classic metal-head, and fuck was he hot.

Adam leaned over to his boyfriend “Nice choice in music sexy.” and kissed him before the two moved into the bedroom for the first of many times.
