Rain pelted the front windshield and created a fog of darkness before Deputy Daniel Powers. Carefully, Powers made his way up the windy back-country roads to the old, abandoned resort bought by some big city corporation a few months back.
Rounding a turn, his mind was fixated on the recent series of odd events. ‘Not much happened out in these parts. Hell, in the 9 years he’d been a deputy there’d been just one murder, and that was just Miss Smiley takin’ out her no-good husband. The last month though, crime had skyrocketed.’
‘It started with the break-ins, houses picked over for food and other essentials leading up to the corner store being cleared. Then came the disappearances. Truckers disappearin’ with their trucks never to be found, the odd traveler goin’ missing, and even a couple of the local teens like Tommy, his boy’s best friend, lost without a trace.‘
